Born at Princeton, Massachusetts, son of Leonard Chaffin and Elizabeth Rice. Early life in LaHarpe, Hancock County, Illinois; marriage to Sarah M. Cossitt Mayfield in 1837; conversion to Mormonism; persecution of the Mormons at LaHarpe; exodus west; arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, 1852; mission to Australia, 1856-1860; move to St. George, Utah, 1861; operation of grist mills and cotton gins; removal to Cedar City, Utah.
